Sexuality is the general term that encompasses your sexual thoughts, attractions, feelings, and thoughts towards people. Your sexuality determines how you think someone is physically, emotionally, or sexually attractive. It’s important that you discover your sexuality so you can accept it and live comfortably.
There are dozens of sexual orientations that are unique in their own way. Note that your sexual category is meant to guide you and not necessarily set boundaries. It might take a while to know your exact sexuality type. Heck, you might match with two or more sexual orientations. Sexuality is fluid and labels exist but you can decide to choose what you align with. However, learning your sexual orientation starts with knowing the different types of sexuality and their meanings.
What is Queer?
It’s best to clear the air and explain what queer means. It can be used as an umbrella term for people who are part of the LGBTQ community. Some others also use the word as an adjective to describe non-heterosexual people. It’s a bit complicated because some people only prefer to be called queer rather than other LGBTQ terms. But some others identify as lesbian or gay and also as queer. On the other hand, not everyone within the LGBTQ community thinks it’s a befitting term. So I guess everyone has the freedom to select their preferred sexual term.
We all know what heterosexuality is. It’s the basic and most generally accepted sexual orientation in the world. A heterosexual or straight individual is someone who is attracted to the opposite sex. Males like females and vice versa.
Homosexuality is about attraction to someone of the same sex. This means homosexuals feel a physical, sexual, and emotional attachment to their own gender. Males like males and females like females. Lesbian and gay people fall under the homosexual category.
Gay people are those who have romantic, physical, and emotional attractions to their own gender. You should note that members of the LGBTQ community may find some terms offensive. So you need to tread with caution and only identify people as what they claim to be. Women can be gay but they sometimes prefer to be called lesbians. Some gay people also hate the ‘homosexual’ term because they feel it’s offensive and derogatory.
Lesbians are females who are attracted to other females. They are physically, romantically, sexually, and emotionally attracted to other women. You can refer to lesbians as gay or gay women but stick to whatever term a particular individual prefers.
This is a type of sexuality that involves attraction to both men and women. Bisexual people can either be male or female and they feel the attraction nonetheless. Some straight individuals who have had relationships with the opposite sex might also have a thing for their own gender. Bisexual people may experience a wavering of the attraction they feel towards the same sex or the opposite sex. So the attraction levels may increase or reduce at certain periods.
An asexual person is one who experiences little or no sexual attraction. An asexual person is quite capable of feeling romantic and emotional attraction so they can still have healthy relationships. It’s a bit weird because some asexual people can be aroused and have sexual intercourse. However, they still do not feel sexual attraction towards their partner so the relationship relies on romantic and emotional attraction.
Pansexuals are those who are attracted to everyone. They are attracted to males, females, transsexual, intersexual, and other gender identities. Pansexuals are not in any way limited. They can form sexual relationships with anyone irrespective of sex or gender. Pansexual is often called omnisexual.
A demisexual is a person who cannot feel a sexual connection unless they are romantically attracted to someone. They need to get very familiar with you before involving in any sexual activity. Demisexual is part of asexuality but the sexual attraction only occurs after romantic or emotional connection.
Although romantic and sexual attraction is separate things, many people tend to rule the difference out. You already know that bisexual people feel sexual attraction to both their same-sex and the opposite sex. In the same vein, biromantic people feel romantic attraction to their gender and the opposite gender too.
Simply put, a demiromantic person is someone who can’t feel romantically attracted to anyone unless they are emotionally attached to the person. So I guess it’s possible to have sexual and romantic preferences.
There you have it. While this list doesn’t contain all the existing sexuality types, it helps to shed light on some of the terms. Hope you had fun learning about different types of sexuality and their meanings.
